Military Says Dozens of Rebels Killed in Clash
From Times Wire Reports
Sri Lanka’s navy sank 12 Tamil Tiger craft in a fierce sea battle off the island’s northern tip, the military said today.
A spokesman said the military believed that it had killed dozens of rebel fighters, but there was no independent confirmation.
The clash, which occurred near the Jaffna peninsula, comes as the army is seeking to wrest control of rebel territory near a strategic port in the island’s northeast.
The military spokesman said two sailors were injured and two navy boats were slightly damaged by gunfire.
