Latin countries are independent of U.S.

Re “Latin America’s not fun couple,” Opinion, Sept. 6

Reading Nancy Soderberg’s piece, you would think that a new “axis of evil” (Cuba-Argentina-Venezuela) is forming in Latin America. Notice to Soderberg: Countries have a right to pursue a future independent of U.S. interests. Let us not forget that it is our government, and institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, that are partially at fault for keeping developing countries in perpetual debt, and thus poverty.

International investors do not have a guarantee on investment returns overseas. If they lose money because Argentina defaults, so be it; that’s why there is something called “risk” associated with investing overseas.
