From Times Wire Reports

A British soldier pleaded guilty to treating Iraqi detainees inhumanely, at a court-martial Justice Stuart McKinnon called the first war crimes trial conducted by Britain’s army.

Cpl. Donald Payne denied the more serious charge of manslaughter as well as obstructing justice in the death of Baha Mousa, 26, who died Sept. 15, 2003, at a British base in Basra, Iraq.

Six other British soldiers being prosecuted with Payne denied all charges.
