A bottom line on global warming

Share

Re “Dire warming report too soft, scientists say,” April 7

The United Nations now reports that global warming is “irreversible but could be moderated by large-scale societal changes.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco), in a position to effect such changes, says “it is not too late to slow it down. We must base our actions on moral imperatives free of political interference.” This is the same speaker who triumphantly passed a budget that eliminates all the Bush tax cuts after 2010, setting the stage for a huge tax increase.

What will “large-scale societal changes” to attack global warming entail? Command-and-control government regulation of the economy and even more taxes, among other things.

To all the fanatical global warming disciples and pro-big government Democrats, be careful what you wish for: A collapsing economy will surely be one of them.

If global warming is not completely accepted as scientific fact and acted on by President Bush and his gang of doubters, then there will be, sooner than anticipated, a lot more sand for them to stick their heads in.

When I read the short article on the Peruvian glacier melting (April 7), I understood why policymakers in rich countries have been letting global warming proceed unchecked. The rich need winners and losers in order to increase their wealth -- they need only bet on the winning side.

Too bad if Peru’s poor no longer get water for free; there’s money to be made in building dams and selling the water, even if only a small minority can pay.
