The March 2005 earthquake off the Indonesian coast produced the greatest mass death of coral ever recorded, the Wildlife Conservation Society said Wednesday.

A survey of 36 sites along miles of coastline showed massive losses of coral, with much of it lifted above sea level. The entire island of Simeulue, for example, was raised nearly 4 feet, exposing the nearly 200 miles of coral that ringed the island.
