Hundreds of rioters set fire to buildings, attacked U.N. cars and threw rocks at police in East Timor as violence triggered by the appointment of Jose Alexandre Gusmao as prime minister spread beyond the capital, police said. At least six people were hurt.

Gangs rampaged in the capital, Dili, but the worst violence was in Baukau, 50 miles to the east, where the offices of international aid groups and government agencies were set ablaze.
