Thirtysomething, and enjoying it

Share

NO one celebrates pop culture decades like VH1, but actress Jill Ritchie’s wacky new Thursday night sitcom takes a different, more personal spin. “I Hate My 30s” warns twentysomethings of the pitfalls dead ahead, yet Ritchie, 33, is having the time of her life. Besides the series, Pam Anderson’s former sister-in-law (Jill’s brother is Kid Rock) also has a movie coming out in November starring the Rock, “Southland Tales.”

In the Friday flow

On Fridays I love to take the 5 o’clock yoga class with Peter Barnett at the Black Dog Yoga in Sherman Oaks. It’s what’s called a flow class, and it’s a great way to start winding down from the workweek. It’s 90 minutes, and when you leave, you feel like, “OK, I got a workout in, and I’m ready for the weekend.”

After that I might treat myself to something hearty for dinner, so my husband Brad and I will go to Houston’s in Century City. The ribs are fantastic and unlike anywhere else in town. The area is fun to walk around after dinner; it almost feels like New York with all the people out and about. We might catch a movie at the AMC Theatres too; they just got redone, and they’re great.

A spokes woman

On Saturday drive our bikes down to Santa Monica and then ride over to Temescal Canyon. When we get hungry, we’ll pedal over to PCH and the Back on the Beach cafe and maybe get some turkey burgers. The seating is right on the sand, and it’s so relaxing -- another great way to reward yourself with some good food after a hard week.

Since my husband and I are USC grads, we’ll take in a football or basketball game. We have season tickets to both, and if it’s a football game, we usually pack sandwiches and drinks for a tailgate party. Sometimes we tailgate a little too long, so it’s up to me to keep it to two or three hours.

After the game, we’ll roll into Saturday night with some Mexican food at Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks. It’s been around forever, and it’s so cool -- there are no windows, so it’s almost black inside, and they have the strongest margaritas, so I always limit myself to one. The food is old-school Mexican, and I love their fajitas. It’s always crowded and noisy, especially in the bar -- the perfect atmosphere for after a football game.

Menu, merchandise

On Sunday morning we’ll go to the Beverly Glen Deli, where besides having great sandwiches, they also have great breakfasts. We’ll order eggs and turkey bacon and then walk around to the various shops. I always have to pop in at the Yellow Dog clothing store, where they have every kind of T-shirt and other casual clothing. There’s also a Stripes shoe store, which has a really great selection, everything from flip-flops to high heels.

In the afternoon, we might go meet my brother in Malibu. This time of year everybody’s in the water, the kids and the dogs. Afterward I might stop at Duke’s on the beach, where you can sit and have drinks and appetizers. Or we’ll just come home and go out on the deck, grill up some steaks and watch some Sunday night “Entourage.”
