Choline is linked to colon polyp risk

The essential nutrient choline -- which is found in red meat, poultry, eggs and milk -- may increase the risk of colon polyps, at least for women, U.S. researchers reported Tuesday in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Choline is involved in processes similar to those in which folate is involved.

And because folate is a vitamin known to protect against genetic changes that can lead to cancer, researchers had thought that choline might also have a protective effect.

Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston studied 40,000 nurses and found that those who ate the most choline were 45% more likely to develop polyps than those who consumed the smallest amount.
