More than 100 killed in Afghan clash
U.S.-led coalition troops and their Afghan allies killed more than 100 suspected Taliban fighters in ground clashes and airstrikes in Kandahar province, the coalition said late Tuesday.
The battle in the Shah Wali Kot district of the southern province started after the joint force was ambushed. The guerrillas tried to overrun the coalition position several times before they were strafed from the air, the statement said.
An Afghan soldier and more than 100 militants were killed, the coalition said. Three coalition troops and three Afghan soldiers were wounded. The casualty figures could not be independently verified because of the remoteness of the area.
The vast majority of coalition troops are American.
In eastern Afghanistan, a suicide bomber attacked North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops helping to build a bridge Tuesday, killing three American soldiers, a U.S. official said.
Also Tuesday, the U.S.-led coalition said its troops raided a house near Kandahar city, killing two suspected militants and detaining five.
Those targeted were accused of facilitating bomb attacks, the statement said.
