U.S. may use Iraq strategy on Al Qaeda

The U.S. military is seeing early signs that Al Qaeda may be stepping up its activities in Afghanistan, a senior Pentagon official disclosed as Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates made his third trip to the country.
U.S. officials said they were considering the possibility of providing local tribes in Afghanistan with weapons, training, equipment and other support. The effort would be modeled after efforts in Iraq.
