THE ENABLER

Share

During the recent Hillary Rodham Clinton headquarters hostage-taking crisis, the Enabler nursed a frosty pint at a Pasadena sports bar called the 35er. The TVs suspended throughout the dingy room were tuned to Fox News. “Someone took hostages at President Clinton’s office?” a man in a red trucker’s hat asked the hardened assortment of noontime drinkers.

“It’s his wife’s office,” a round-bellied regular replied.

“Oh. Well, what’d she do?” the man asked.

“She’s running for president,” the bartender replied.

“Oh,” the man said.

“Someone’s keeping Clinton’s wife hostage,” he called to a friend before ordering a Bloody Maria.

“It’s made with tequila,” the bartender said.

The man recoiled, “Gimme a real Bloody Mary, with vodka.”

“From the well?” the bartender asked.

“No, make it Skyy,” the man said.

The 35er is a place you go to forget. Rare is the Old Town Pasadena bar where you can find someone so aware of the quality of vodka but so oblivious to the fact that Hillary Rodham Clinton is running for president. And sometimes that’s just the point. 12 E. Colorado Blvd. (626) 356-9315
