Silver Lake plus the Westside

Times Staff Writer

Andy Griffith and Rose Apodaca opened their first A+R store in a tiny space on Silver Lake Boulevard, showcasing international designs for the home including cutting-edge Czech ceramics and the in-your-face products of London manufacturer Suck UK. Now, Westside residents can get a taste of the couple’s cool-seeker sensibility in a new Venice location. The space, designed by L.A. boho-modernist architect Barbara Bestor, has a crisp, museum store minimalism with oversized pegboard shelves and primary-colored cabinets. Recent finds include Harry Allen’s Reality series cast resin hands ($85), pictured here with a stocking stuffer set of hand-shaped hand soaps ($20). Griffith and Apodaca, a contributor to the Times’ Image section, also stock Tristan Zimmermann’s Phonofone ($890, right), a nonelectronic ceramic amplifier for iPods in the shape of an old-fashioned gramophone, and Barcelona designer Jaime Hayon’s ceramic candleholder, which resembles a big black cartoon bug on its back. 1121-1 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Los Angeles, (310) 392-9128; 1716 Silver Lake Blvd., (323) 913-9558; www.aplusrstore.com.
