Cisco Systems Inc. development chief Charles Giancarlo, seen as the likely successor to Chief Executive John Chambers, will resign to join private equity firm Silver Lake.

Giancarlo, 50, once led Cisco’s biggest division and its acquisition strategy. He is the second top executive to leave in less than six months, after finance chief Dennis Powell. San Jose-based Cisco, the largest maker of networking equipment, named a seven-person team to take over Giancarlo’s product-development roles.
