Advances made on cirrhosis of liver

Working with mice, UC San Diego researchers have shown that they can block the fibrosis associated with cirrhosis of the liver -- and perhaps even reverse it once it has occurred.

The team reported Thursday in the Public Library of Science online journal that the fibrosis is caused by accumulation of excess collagne during the healing process.

By blocking the activity of a protein called RSK, they were able to prevent fibrosis from occurring. The drug also reversed some of the fibrosis that was present.
