Laguna announces 2007-08 season
With two world premiere play commissions in an eclectic 2007-08 season lineup, the Laguna Playhouse continues its growing emphasis on the development of new work for the stage.
Announced Monday, the commissioned plays are “Brownstone” (March 25-April 27, 2008), Catherine Butterfield’s linked stories of occupants of a Manhattan brownstone from the 1930s to the new millennium, and “Alexandros” (May 27-June 29, 2008), a comedy about a family birthday party, closeted skeletons and a cranky canine, by Melinda Lopez (“Sonia Flew”).
A third world premiere, “Tranced” (Feb. 12-March 16, 2008), is a thriller by Bob Clyman.
“A couple of years back, we began investing in developing new work by commission with writers whose work we knew and had produced,” said Richard Stein, executive director. Also on tap in 2008: the Southern California premiere of Michael Hollinger’s Red Scare spoof, “Red Herring,” (Jan. 1-Feb. 3).
The season opens with Jeanie Linders’ “Menopause: The Musical” (July 10-Sept. 2). Other 2007 offerings: Yasmina Reza’s “Art” (Sept. 11-Oct. 14), the Randal Myler-Mark Harelik musical, “Hank Williams: Lost Highway” (Nov. 13-Dec. 16) and Maripat Donovan’s “Sister’s Christmas Catechism” (Dec. 17-23).
