16 troops, 69 rebels die in clashes
Clashes between the Yemeni army and followers of a Shiite Muslim rebel leader have killed 16 troops and 69 guerrillas in the last three days, military officials said.
An army official said government forces bombarded areas where followers of Abdel-Malek Hawthi were believed to be hiding out about 112 miles north of Sana, the capital.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said about 50 rebels had been arrested.
The government has been fighting the rebels since June 2004.
