Hope Gardens shelter supported

Re “Shelter chief criticizes Antonovich,” Feb. 17

Every night that beds continue to stay empty at Hope Gardens instead of being used to safely house women and children from skid row is a shame. It’s an even bigger tragedy that Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich and his cohorts have caused the Union Rescue Mission to spend more than $1 million in legal fees and interest payments fighting to get this wonderfully designed project going. The Board of Supervisors must step in now to end this rogue politician’s time-wasting tactics.

As an unhappy constituent, I will certainly remember Antonovich’s heartless deeds next time he runs for office.

It is a shame that neighbors would complain about a facility in the middle of nowhere. Still, I wonder whether a facility like that -- in the middle of nowhere, where the mothers and their children are marooned far from the life into which they are supposedly being re-integrated -- has much value. On the other hand, for those trying to get rid of the homeless, what a great way to get them out of the way. Otherwise, it would seem more beneficial to put the mothers and their children in a location where there is easy access to the things they need.
