Less is best

Re “Triumph of capitalism,” Opinion, Feb. 22

Timothy Garton Ash asks if we are “ready to settle for less so others can have more.” I would answer with a resounding “yes!”

Many of us have already begun to move toward more sustainability: driving less, living in smaller homes, keeping the heat off, buying organic and local produce, wearing natural fibers, avoiding disposable products, putting solar panels on our homes, owning fewer possessions and giving our money to green companies and progressive politicians.

Unfortunately, most Americans still think it is our birthright to consume more resources than our parents did, more than any other nation on Earth.

What we now need is real leadership so that future generations will enjoy the benefits of our wisdom, empathy and foresight, instead of having to manage the consequences of our selfish ravaging of the planet.
