Fighting leaves 2 dead in Mogadishu
Gunmen attacked Somalian police in northern Mogadishu, leading to an hourlong battle that claimed two lives and underscored the U.S.-backed government’s feeble grip on power.
A Somalian government spokesman warned that Islamist fighters from the deposed Islamic Courts Union were regrouping as Ethiopia prepared to withdraw its troops.
The African Union has approved a plan to send about 8,000 peacekeepers for a six-month mission that would eventually be taken over by the United Nations. But no date has been given for arrival of the force.
