The first of 700 refugees of the Kunama ethnic group who were displaced by Ethiopia and Eritrea’s 1998-2000 border war are being sent to the United States for resettlement, the United Nations refugee agency said.

The Kunama people number about 100,000. Their home is in the disputed frontier area between the two African countries.

The 700 Kunama crossed into Ethiopia from Eritrea after the war, complaining of persecution and harassment by the Eritrean government, said the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The war killed 70,000 people.
