Abbas plans to call new elections
From Times Wire Reports
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said he would call new legislative elections, but the Islamic militant movement Hamas said early elections would be illegal and warned they could lead to violence.
Abbas’ aides said they expected the vote to be held by year’s end or in early 2008.
In a speech to a policymaking body of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the West Bank, Abbas, of the Fatah movement, denounced Hamas, accusing it of staging “a coup” against him in the Gaza Strip.
