From Times Wire Reports

A blackout that struck Barcelona, Spain’s second-largest city, snarled traffic and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, authorities said.

Officials said they believe the outage was triggered by a faulty cable that fell, causing problems in several substations.

About 350,000 households and businesses lost power. Officials said as many as 80,000 of them might have to wait weeks for power to be restored.

Firefighters reported a flood of calls from people stuck in elevators, and police officers were sent to major intersections to direct traffic.
