10,000 flee fighting in Mogadishu

About 10,000 people have fled Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, in the last week, and the exodus sparked by fighting continues, the United Nations said.
The Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said even those who had returned to Mogadishu recently are leaving again, fearing for their safety.
Government troops backed by Ethiopian forces drove an Islamist movement out of the city in December. But roadside bombs, attacks on government installations, assassination attempts and gun battles have become common. Civilians often are caught in the crossfire.
