J.K. Rowling, author of the “Harry Potter” series, said she plans to write an encyclopedia about the boy wizard and his magical world.

Rowling, whose seventh and final Potter novel hit stores Saturday, plans to use 17 years of notes to supply details that didn’t make it into the stories, she said in an interview with Meredith Vieira on NBC’s “Today” show that begins airing today. NBC released excerpts Tuesday.

“There’s always been bits that I knew about characters that didn’t make the final cuts because they weren’t that relevant,” Rowling said.

Rowling, 41, also said she won’t write a prequel to the series because that “takes us into ‘Star Wars’ territory.”

In the interview, she discusses her decisions in killing off characters, as well as what she will do now that the series is over.

The final book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” sold a record 8.3 million copies in the U.S. in its first day. The first six have sold more than 325 million copies worldwide.
