Track and field

Yeimer Lopez won the men’s 800 meters Saturday in 1 minute 44.58 seconds, a Pan American Games record, helping Cuba dominate track and field with 12 gold medals.

Cuban athletes were the standouts in athletics, winning 30 medals. Brazil finished second with eight gold medals and 22 overall. The United States had six gold and 24 total.

The men’s marathon will be run today.

Cuba won the women’s 1,600-meter relay, finishing in 3:37.51 with Mexico in second place in 3:27.75 and the U.S. in third in 3:27.84.

Michael Robertson (Palo Alto) won the men’s discus with a throw of 194.36 feet and Adam Kuehl (Tucson) was second.

The U.S. finished 1-2 in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase, with Josh McAdams overtaking Michael Spence on the back stretch to earn the gold in 8:30.49.

Brazil pulled a surprise in the men’s 400 relay, where Sandro Viana out-sprinted Brian Barnett of Canada in the final stretch to take gold in 38.81. The U.S. was third in 38.88.

Jamaica won the women’s 400 relay, with Peta Gaye Dowdie holding off a charge by American Miki Barber to win in 43.58. The United States was 0.04 of a second behind, and Cuba finished third.

The Bahamas won the men’s 400 relay in 3:01.94. The United States was second.

Boxing

Philadelphia light-welterweight Karl Dargan closed his amateur career with a gold medal. He outpointed Jonathan Gonzalez Ortiz of Puerto Rico, 9-4.

The Americans won two gold, one silver and one bronze in boxing.

Men’s basketball

Puerto Rico beat Argentina, 89-80, and Brazil beat Uruguay, 85-73, in the semifinals.

Softball

Rain forced the cancellation of the title game between the U.S. and Venezuela, and the Americans (4-0) were awarded the gold medal because of their record. Venezuela was 3-1.

Synchronized swimming

Brooke Abel (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Meghan Kinney (Mission Viejo) helped the U.S. claim a spot in next year’s Beijing Olympics by winning the team competition with a 95.667 score.

Rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline

Lisa Wang (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) won in the ribbon event, just ahead of Julie Zetlin (Bethesda, Md.), and earned silver medals in rope and clubs. Chris Estrada (Lafayette, La.) and Ryan Weston (Chubback, Idaho) finished first and third in men’s trampoline.
