Hershey’s closure of chocolate plant

Share

Re “Town sees nothing sweet in chocolate plant closing,” May 31

Hershey Co., built on the name of the founder and the sweat of many hardworking Americans, has finally betrayed its employees for the almighty dollar. Such companies have no allegiance to anyone or any country; money is all that matters to them.

The real villain in all this is the cowardly United States government, which has forced companies to pay expensive benefits while failing to encourage stability in the workforce over short-term gains.

Americans must now use the only appropriate avenue open to them: get a new government and never buy a Hershey bar again.

I always hate to see good manufacturing jobs go to other countries. But I’m willing to bet that many of those who were protesting Hershey’s move were wearing clothes made in China, have a house full of electronics made in Korea and drove a car made in Japan. They want their jobs protected but are unwilling to extend that same favor to their countrymen.

Perhaps Hershey’s bittersweet decision to move from Oakdale, Calif., to Mexico can be reversed. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Legislature should quickly authorize tax incentives that would terminate the sweet flow of chocolate and jobs from the Golden State. What’s next, apple pie?
