Short run, but true to ‘Fidelity’

The cast album of a Broadway musical that was set in a record store finally gets to occupy space in one with its belated debut on CD. “High Fidelity,” a stage adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel, has been released in original cast recording form -- even though the high-spirited tuner lasted only 32 performances last fall.

“The album’s release will help the show have a life in the future,” says Tom Kitt, the composer who teamed with Amanda Green (daughter of lyricist Adolph Green and actress Phyllis Newman) for the show. It’s not uncommon for shows that have met with a poor reception on Broadway to see healthy life on disc (or download), since they’re often staged in regional or community theater for years afterward. The new CD is on Ghostlight Records.

“High Fidelity,” which was also a popular John Cusack flick, tells the story of a record store owner and list freak who knows everything about pop music but zilch about how to hold on to a girl.
