Put the blame where it belongs

Re “Still gung-ho,” Opinion, June 3

Could it be that -- just like today in Iraq -- wrongheaded foreign policy, lying to Americans about the cause for war and bullheaded stubbornness in the face of reality on the part of many political and military leaders had more to do with the loss of troop morale in Vietnam? Maybe actual racism in the institutions of our society, including our military, had something to do with “race-related disputes.” Maybe drug trafficking and trapped soldiers who knew that the Vietnam War was wrong but still had to fight had something to do with the “drug problems.” What does Tony Perry want us to do, stop opposing the war so that morale can be high and more of our young people can continue to be sacrificed? Perry should put the blame where it belongs -- on those who deceived us.
