From Times Staff Reports

The number of attacks on police involving firearms is up 59% during the first five months of the year, and Police Chief William J. Bratton blames gang members and a proliferation of guns in the hands of youths.

Firearm-related assaults rose from 16 during the first five months of 2006 to 27 during the same period this year, Bratton told officers at a roll call at the LAPD’s Central Division station.

“It’s up alarmingly this year, and we are tracking it very closely,” Bratton told officers.
