Kurds entitled as Palestinians are
Re “Stand by the Kurds,” Opinion, June 7
Najmaldin O. Karim spotlights a situation that attracts too little attention in this country. The Kurds are Muslims but not Islamists, so they have no clout in the Muslim world. They also seem to have no clout in the West. The U.S. and other Western countries go on record advocating a state of Palestine but squelch any possibility of a state of Kurdistan. The Kurds have a distinct ethnic and cultural identity that goes back centuries. By comparison, the people called Palestinians have no identity separate from the Arabs in what is now Jordan. If they have a right to autonomy, certainly the Kurds deserve no less -- and probably a lot more.
