From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The number of cases of Lyme disease has doubled in the United States since 1991, and the number is probably underestimated, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

More than 21,000 cases are reported yearly, making the tick-borne disease the most common illness transmitted by bugs or animals in the United States.

The Northeast had the most cases, with 2,335 cases reported in Massachusetts in 2005, 3,363 in New Jersey, 5,565 in New York, and 4,287 in Pennsylvania.
