Color blinded

Oops, there it is! Why is it when a black athlete wins at something that requires a little less physicality than say basketball or football, and a little more mental ability like Formula One racing, it surprises some people? Ed Hinton sounded like that in his story on Lewis Hamilton’s winning the Canadian Grand Prix and being the only Formula One driver of African descent to win a major automobile race.

Stating that Lewis was “wise enough” because Formula One requires “the judgments of a supercomputer” reminded me of the shock some people expressed upon finding a black quarterback who could throw, call plays and lead a team to a Super Bowl win.
