Mega-gift for Clark Art Institute
The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass., has received a large group of 18th and 19th century British artworks and a $50-million endowment for a research center from the Manton Foundation.
The collection and the foundation are the legacy of Sir Edwin A.G. Manton, a British insurance executive who lived in the United States for decades and made his fortune with American International Group. During his lifetime, Manton was a major donor to the Tate Gallery in London.
The foundation’s gift to the Clark encompasses paintings, oil sketches, watercolors and other works on paper, including 20 pieces by J.M.W. Turner, 50 by John Constable and 18 by Thomas Gainsborough. The collection will go on view at the Clark this summer.
