Federal immigration agents arrested a former Bangladeshi army major wanted for his role in a 1975 military-backed coup that resulted in the assassination of the country’s president, Sheikh Mujib Rahman.
Mohiuddin A.K.M. Ahmed, 60, was arrested in Los Angeles on Tuesday, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In 1998, Ahmed was convicted in Bangladesh in absentia and sentenced to death, authorities said.
Ahmed entered the United States in 1996 on a visitor’s visa. An immigration judge ordered him deported in 2002. Last month, Ahmed lost his appeal to stay in the country.
