Protesters attacked lawmakers who were seeking a court motion to block a ruling that ousted more than half of Ecuador’s legislature, police said.

A judge said he would hear the lawmakers’ injunction request.

Officers fired tear gas to break up the crowd, which threw rocks and punches at lawmakers in the town of Rocafuerte, 145 miles southwest of the capital, Quito. Three police officers and four protesters were injured.

Ecuador’s highest electoral tribunal fired 57 of the 100 members of Congress last week, accusing them of interfering in a constitutional referendum. The firing came after the lawmakers ordered impeachment proceedings against the court’s majority.
