No faith in prayer

Re “Snow is back on the podium,” May 1

It was good to see White House press secretary Tony Snow back on the job after colon cancer surgery. However, it is unfortunate that he said: “Anybody who does not believe that thoughts and prayers make a difference, they’re just wrong.” I beg to differ.

As a survivor of lymphoma and kidney cancer, I can assure Snow that thoughts and prayers had nothing to do with my being symptom-free after 20 years. I attribute my survival to early detection, surgery, radiation and good luck. I advise people diagnosed with cancer to devote all their efforts to finding the best available medical care and not to place false hopes in prayer and the sympathy of others.
