Top witness pleads guilty in mob case
The star witness in the government’s case against a dozen alleged Chicago mob figures pleaded guilty to taking part in a conspiracy that included 18 murders.
Nicholas Calabrese admitted that he took part in planning or carrying out 14 of the murders, including hits on Tony “The Ant” Spilotro, long known as the Chicago mob’s man in Las Vegas, and Spilotro’s brother, in 1986.
Calabrese is expected to be the key witness against brother Frank Calabrese Sr. and others charged in the Operation Family Secrets mob investigation.
