Other deaths

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel who were killed in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan or who died on the way to an overseas military hospital:

Andrew J. Bacevich, 27, of Walpole, Mass.; first lieutenant, Army. Bacevich died May 13 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when a roadside bomb exploded near his unit in Salahuddin province, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Larry J. Bauguess Jr., 36, of Moravian Falls, N.C.; major, Army. Bauguess was shot and killed Monday in an ambush while leaving a meeting in Teri Mangal, Pakistan, seeking to calm clashes between Afghan and Pakistani troops policing a border crossed daily by insurgents. He was assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

James D. Connell Jr., 40, of Lake City, Tenn.; sergeant first class, Army. Connell was among four soldiers killed May 12 in an ambush by insurgents using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire near Mahmoudiya, Iraq, south of Baghdad. Connell was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Daniel W. Courneya, 19, of Nashville, Mich.; private first class, Army. Courneya was among four soldiers killed May 12 in an ambush by insurgents using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire near Mahmoudiya, Iraq, south of Baghdad. Courneya was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Allen J. Dunckley, 25, of Yardley, Pa.; sergeant, Army. Dunckley was one of two soldiers killed Monday when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive and small-arms fire in Salman Pak, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

William A. Farrar Jr., 20, of Redlands; private first class, Army. Farrar was killed May 11 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Iskandariya, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 127th Military Police Company, 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade in Darmstadt, Germany.

Michael K. Frank, 36, of Great Falls, Mont.; specialist, Army. Frank was killed May 10 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Aaron D. Gautier, 19, of Hampton, Va.; private first class, Army. Gautier was among three soldiers killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near their unit and it was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Christopher N. Gonzalez, 25, of Winslow, Ariz.; sergeant, Army. Gonzalez was one of two soldiers killed Monday when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive and small-arms fire in Salman Pak, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Zachary R. Gullett, 20, of Hillsboro, Ohio; private first class, Army. Gullett collapsed and died May 1 while exercising in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 984th Military Police Company, 759th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Jonathan V. Hamm, 20, of Baltimore; private first class, Army. Hamm was killed Thursday when his forward operating base in Baghdad was attacked with indirect enemy fire -- a mortar or artillery round. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Nicholas S. Hartge, 20, of Rome City, Ind.; private first class, Army. Hartge was killed Monday when his unit was attacked with grenades and an improvised explosive in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Rhys W. Klasno, 20, of Riverside; specialist, Army National Guard. Klasno was killed May 13 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Haditha, Iraq, northwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1114th Transportation Company in Bakersfield.

Christopher E. Murphy, 21, of Lynchburg, Va.; private first class, Army. Murphy was among four soldiers killed May 12 in an ambush by insurgents using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire near Mahmoudiya, Iraq, south of Baghdad. Murphy was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Steven M. Packer, 23, of Clovis, Calif.; sergeant, Army. Packer was killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near his unit while on foot patrol in Rushdi Mullah, Iraq, southwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Anthony J. Sausto, 22, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; private, Army. Sausto was killed May 10 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

John T. Self, 29, of Pontotoc, Miss.; staff sergeant, Air Force. Self was killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near his unit in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 314th Security Forces Squadron at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark.

Jeffrey D. Walker, 21, of Macon, Ga.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Walker was killed in combat Monday in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Joshua R. Whitaker, 23, of Long Beach; staff sergeant, Army. Whitaker was killed in a firefight Tuesday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire near Qalat, Afghanistan, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Thomas G. Wright, 38, of Holly, Mich.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Wright died Monday on a flight to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for treatment after suddenly becoming ill while serving in Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 46th Military Police Company, 210th Military Police Battalion in Kingsford, Mich.

Douglas A. Zembiec, 34, of Albuquerque; major, Marine Corps. Zembiec was killed May 11 while leading a raid on insurgents in Baghdad. He was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps National Capital Region, Henderson Hall in Arlington, Va.
