The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Thomas L. Bruner, 50, of Owensboro, Ky.; master sergeant, Army Reserve. Bruner died of an apparent heart attack Oct. 28 in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Headquarters, 2nd Brigade, 100th Division in Owensboro, Ky.

James D. Bullard, 28, of Marion, S.C.; staff sergeant, Army National Guard. Bullard was killed Tuesday when his unit was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and small-arms fire in Sperwan Ghar in southern Afghanistan’s Kandahar province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 263rd Armor Regiment in Marion, S.C.

Jeffrey R. Calero, 34, of Queens Village, N.Y.; major, Army National Guard. Calero was killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near him while he was on foot patrol in Kajaki in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Springfield, Mass.

Cody M. Carver, 19, of Haskell, Okla.; private, Army. Carver was among three soldiers killed Tuesday when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire in Salman Pak, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Thomas A. Crowell, 36, of Neosho, Mo.; master sergeant, Air Force. Crowell was one of two airmen and an Air Force civilian killed Thursday when an improvised explosive device detonated near them near Balad Air Force Base, Iraq, north of Baghdad. All three were special agents for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Crowell was assigned to Detachment 301 at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

Louis A. Griese, 30, of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; sergeant, Army. Griese died Wednesday in Tikrit, Iraq, north of Baghdad, of wounds suffered when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle north

of Samarra. He was assigned to

the 2nd Battalion, 327th

Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Rush M. Jenkins, 22, of Clarksville, Tenn.; private first class, Army. Jenkins was among three soldiers killed Tuesday when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire in Salman Pak, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Daniel L. McCall, 24, of Pace, Fla.; sergeant, Army. McCall was among three soldiers killed Tuesday when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire in Salman Pak, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Timothy I. McGovern, 28, of Idaville, Ind.; captain, Army. McGovern was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Mosul, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Bliss, Texas.

Nathan J. Schuldheiss, 27, of Newport, R.I.; civilian investigator, Air Force. Schuldheiss and two airmen were killed Thursday when an improvised explosive device detonated near them near Balad Air Force Base, Iraq, north of Baghdad. All three were special agents for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Schuldheiss was assigned to Detachment 204 at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.

Brandon W. Smitherman, 21, of Conroe, Texas; specialist, Army. Smitherman was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Mosul, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Bliss, Texas.

David A. Wieger, 28, of North Huntingdon, Pa.; staff sergeant, Air Force. Wieger was one of two airmen and an Air Force civilian killed Thursday when an improvised explosive device detonated near them near Balad Air Force Base, Iraq, north of Baghdad. All three were special agents for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Wieger was assigned to Detachment 303 at Travis Air Force Base, Calif.
