Support for more deportations

Re “Rise in detainees straining system,” Nov. 5

I wanted to praise The Times for writing such an uplifting article about increased deportations in California. The small increase in spending on deportations will result in taxpayer savings as we slowly reduce our illegal immigrant population. Society will benefit by better wages in the service sector, improved driving conditions, improved classrooms, less overcrowding and less bilingual services taking away from the educational needs of students who speak English. I hope increased deportations will send a message that you can no longer hide illegally in California. If we only had better leadership that tackled the importance of increased immigration control, California might move in the right direction.

I am encouraged that the detention of illegal immigrants and associated deportations are increasing. It is about time that law enforcement agencies took action to reduce the number of illegal immigrants. The next step will be to reduce the incentives for crossing the border. I am proud of my immigrant ancestry and do not want our country to stop being a beacon of hope, but only for those who respect our laws.

We are a nation with borders. It is important that our representative government protect citizens’ health and safety by enforcing the rules of this country, including detaining people and then deporting those here illegally. The practice of “detain and release,” which relies on people to deport themselves, has been a failure. It is time that our government enforced the laws.
