Compassion versus morality

Re “Test of tolerance,” editorial, Nov. 15

This may be called Bush bashing, but doesn’t he deserve to be bashed, if not impeached? Your editorial makes reference to President Bush’s “compassionate conservatism.” As I look back over the last seven years, I can find no evidence of compassion demonstrated by Bush, beyond the random photo-op. Unless we count the compassion he has shown toward the rich, super rich and corporate America.

Your editorial’s first sentence urging Bush to sign the bill prohibiting discrimination against homosexuals in the workplace was incomplete. You wrote that including protection for gays in the 1964 Civil Rights Act was “not so much unpopular as unthinkable.”

Complete the sentence by answering: Why unthinkable? Because it was immoral. If it was then, it still is. Discrimination may be just or unjust. Morality determines whether it’s one or the other.
