Birtwell’s fantasy fabrics

Share

After convincing British textiles legend Celia Birtwell to print her 1984 Little Animals pattern for bedroom curtains, local interior designer Suzan Fellman says, “I fell asleep each night dreaming of ways to work with her.” Now, Fellman’s L.A. atelier is the stage for a show of the Londoner’s fantasy-inspired fabrics, including the California flora-inspired 1997 print “Imagine,” which has been imaginatively transformed into lampshades for a pair of vintage lights, shown here ($2,500). Birtwell rocked the ‘60s and ‘70s designing fabric for her couturier husband, Ossie Clark, and she is beloved for her keen sense of color and a whimsical illustrative style reminiscent of 1920s surrealist Jean Cocteau. Fellman has created a collection of pieces upholstered in Birtwell silks and integrated the designer’s decorative motifs into mirrors, light fixtures, a settee and a Lucite chair with a Rococo-a-go-go silhouette. 678 S.
