Responsibility lies with homeowner

Re “When dream homes become nightmares,” Oct. 8

Even if Soledad Aviles had gotten the exact loan he anticipated, with monthly payments of $3,600, that would still amount to $50,000 a year between the mortgage and taxes. How could he possibly hope to afford that on a $60,000 income? The lender deserves to lose money, and the loan agent deserves to go to jail for misleading Aviles about the terms of his loan and falsifying his information, but neither of those was the cause of Aviles losing his home, nor was his most unfortunate illness. The bottom line is that Aviles was never going to be able to afford a $615,000 home, and he has no one to blame but himself for his not being able to keep it. That is the sad reality of this case and I’m sure many others.
