Blocked by court order and environmental protests, Hawaii Superferry announced in Honolulu that it is laying off most of its employees on three islands.

The announcement furloughing 249 of the company’s 309 employees came from Superferry President John Garibaldi two days after a Maui judge ordered the ferry service grounded until an environmental study could be completed.

“An unavoidable consequence of the recent ruling is that we have reached the point where Hawaii Superferry can no longer bear the financial cost of fully retaining its workforce,” Garibaldi said. The company had told the Maui court it was losing $650,000 a week.
