Break the vow

Re “A promise to keep,” editorial, Aug. 27

One thing should be clear -- “promises” were made to a U.S. puppet government, not to the Afghan people. How many more American soldiers have to die before the Afghan military is strong enough? It’s the same rhetoric that is being used in Iraq. We went to Afghanistan to get Al Qaeda. It seems we have given up on defeating Al Qaeda and instead switched to democracy-building in Afghanistan and Iraq. Here we are, six years since 9/11, and there is a record opium crop in Afghanistan. This is one good example of when a promise ought to be broken.
