A military jury decided Wednesday that a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot should not be punished for his conviction on a charge of violating an order against abusing recruits. He could have received a bad-conduct discharge and a year in the brig.

The same jury convicted Sgt. Mark A. Delarosa, 25, an Iraq war veteran, of violating an order by throwing keys at a recruit, hitting him in the eye. The jury acquitted him of assault, maltreatment and other charges involving other recruits.
