Progressive party: An article in Tuesday’s Section A about a gathering of political progressives in Wisconsin defined “chautauqua” as a family reunion. Historically, chautauquas were traveling shows and outdoor gatherings that provided popular education and entertainment in the form of lectures and concerts. They originated in Chautauqua, N.Y., in the late 1800s. The term is sometimes used to describe contemporary events that resemble chautauquas.
