Ireland’s parliament backed Prime Minister Bertie Ahern in a vote of confidence called by the opposition over his testimony at an anti-corruption tribunal.

Ahern defeated the challenge, 81 to 76, thanks to his Fianna Fail party and the coalition allies who helped him clinch a third successive term in May.

Ahern on Monday ended nearly four days of questioning over tens of thousands of pounds he received while finance minister in the 1990s.
