Common drugs build muscle mass

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Taking the daily recommended doses of ibuprofen and acetaminophen produced a significant increase in muscle mass and strength during three months of regular weight training compared with a placebo, researchers reported Sunday at a San Diego meeting of the American Physiological Society.

The drugs apparently produced intramuscular changes that enhance the metabolic response to resistance training, the researchers said.

The results were surprising because short-term studies, over periods as short as 24 hours, showed the drugs were detrimental.
