Quality, not the anchors, is real story

Share

THE article about local TV anchors [“Developing News: Local Anchors Losing Clout,” by Greg Braxton, April 11] seems to miss an important point. One of the big reasons local newscasts are losing viewers is the product itself. It is not very good.

And let’s be honest, it is not really news anymore, but infotainment. There is very little time devoted to actual delivery of news. More time is spent teasing viewers with “what’s coming up next” and self-serving cross promotions of other shows than is actually spent on “news.” Most anchors and reporters are interchangeable.

WHILE the article noted the decline in influence of anchors like Ann Martin and Harold Greene, the fact is that anchors’ credibility has declined in proportion to that of their newscasts. Trust in anchors is simply not important when the news they are reporting is sensationalistic and shallow.
